SGC Meeting - January

The School Governance Council met on Dec. 16, 2021 and Jan. 11, 2022.

  • At the December meeting, the council reviewed two projects proposed by students and staff members on which charter funds could be spent.

    • The first project that the council reviewed was an outdoor classroom.

    • The second project was to design murals that would be placed in high traffic areas to incorporate and celebrate Northview United and the diversity represented in our school.

  • At the end of the meeting in December, the SGC voted unanimously to move forward with these two projects by allocating $17,000 for the outdoor classroom and $10,000 for the murals. The remaining $17,000 will be used for teacher grant requests, with Principal Downey appropriating additional funds as necessary to cover the difference.

  • At the January meeting, the council was informed that once the new operating system implemented by the district was fully functional, all necessary paperwork would be completed for the school to move forward with the two projects approved in December.

    • At the November meeting, the SGC will review all proposals and evaluate them based on a rubric to ensure that the funds are spent in a way that aligns with the school’s strategic plan. Once the requests are approved, teachers will receive further instructions on when they will be able to spend the money.

    • Ms. Benning explained that the Council does its best to accommodate all requests.

  • Principal Downey shared all the COVID mitigation strategies that are currently being implemented at the school. He also informed the council that the daily attendance rate among students and staff was fairly normal with about 95% of students attending each day.

  • Principal Downey updated the council on the budget timeline. As soon as he receives the budget (typically in January), he will prepare the budget and offer “full transparency” to the SGC. Based on the budget timeline, the SGC will decide on when to meet in February and March.

  • Mr. Wu, the parent representative on the Superintendent’s Advisory Council, updated the SGC on the proactive measures the district is taking to ensure campus safety and monitor levels of threat. He informed the SGC that at this time, the district is unable to offer a hybrid model of instruction.

At the February meeting, the council will get an update on the outdoor classroom and mural projects and the budget for the 2022-23 school year.
